Between the Weeds

Inspiring thoughts about life seen between the weeds by creative business owner, Laurie Rohner.

Pink hollyhock and blue delphinium garden nature art.

“Come live in my heart and pay no rent.” - Samuel Lover

“Sometimes what seems like surrender isn’t surrender at all. It’s about what’s going on in our hearts. About seeing clearly the way life is and accepting it and being true to it, whatever the pain, because the pain of not being true to it is far, far greater.” - Nicholas Evans

Slowly I am learning to surrender and live from my heart. I guess you can say I am a slow learner or maybe a late bloomer yet I think it is not when you arrive to realization about yourself. Understanding accepting and being is all that is needed for anyone to live from the heart. Nature and art is a joy and I hope you find my work a heartfelt creation. Please see my work at Between The Weeds Etsy Shop. The artwork included here is an original garden nature art watercolor of blue and pink garden flowers. It is one of many original work by Laurie Rohner.

Arches 300lb hot pressed watercolor rag paper.
This is slightly rough thick hand made paper.

Simple beauty of nature with lilac watercolor by Between The Weeds.

The best remedy for those who are afraid, lonely or unhappy is to go outside, somewhere where they can be quiet, alone with the heavens, nature and God. Because only then does one feel that all is as it should be and that God wishes to see people happy, amidst the simple beauty of nature. Anne Frank

Isn’t it the simple things that offer the greatest pleasure and joy. Nature is a part of my life and always will be and in the foggy moments of any life nature is always there ready for you to connect. It could be a flowers scent, image of a gorgeous landscape,or glimpse of a hummingbird connecting you to simplicity of nature.

Lilacs blooming this time of year with their sweet scents and colorful variety of blooms conjures in my mind afternoon tea with my grandma, Honey. She always had a story to share and I can still hear her giggle (which was very infectious). For Mothers Day in the flower shop I would have bouquets ready all around the shop and the shop would fill with the sweet aroma. So I painted this painting in memory of those wonderful times in my life. Maybe lilacs conjure a memory for you also.

Can you smell the delicate scent of the lilacs? Watercolor by Laurie Rohner.

Watercolor nature art painting, botanical garden pink and purple lilacs with bees buzzing among the flowers is a detailed original garden botanical painting by Laurie Rohner.
I love the feeling I get when I look at my illustration of lilacs and garden flowers with a few bees in watercolor and pen. There is a blush of blue sky hinting at a spring day in May. It is cheery and guarantees a better mood. These are flowers from my gardens in Vermont.

Nature does not hurry at Between The Weeds.

Nature does not hurry, yet everything is accomplished. Lao Tzu

Today at Between The Weeds I would like to share with you one of the new watercolor painting I have just completed. I had hoped to share this new work with you for Mother’s Day. Then one day I looked at this quote I have scribbled on my studio table and was reminded all things happen in their own time. A leaf does not worry about not opening because it is May it opens when it is ready. Slowly I am learning to work within the space where nature exists. We forget is even there.

This is an original watercolor of a woodland garden with bees and a hint of the sky. You can buy it at Between The Weeds or at Laurie Rohner Studio.

Unexpected idea, use this painted farmhouse storage box for a wedding card box.

What a fabulous idea. My nature box sold as a wedding card box.

Gorgeous Wedding Painted Card Box by Laurie Rohner Studio.

I am trying to sell my studio and house in Elkin NC so I can move my business, my favorite companion (Tuck a Standard Poodle), my adventurous life, my possessions (a bit too many) to a home in New Hampshire. While showing this home, a very nice woman who is an event planner for weddings looked at the painted nature box and remarked ” This would make a great card box for weddings”. I should get into that niche here. Great idea, unexpected idea,  since I am moving to New Hampshire. After many years trying to fit as an artist in the community here and never quite getting the feedback I wanted or needed to achieve what it is I intend in my life I am heading on. Just because I am moving does not mean the idea is not valid and I should consider it, so I have.

As you can see there is enough room inside to hold a nice collection of wedding money cards. When the wedding is over you have a gorgeous reminder of a special memorable day.

Painted Nature Storage Box open with mortised hinges.

If you are interested in buying this gorgeous custom painted wedding box you can visit my shop at Laurie Rohner Studio.

ABOUT MY PAINTED WEDDING NATURE BOX.

I painted the poplar wood a lovely shade of the softest creamy gray taupe white. I love this base color. To compliment the color I decided to use a subtle simple design with greens and white flowers that cascade down the front. The botanical woodland flowers are from hydrangea to Queen Ann’s Lace and Lily of the Valley. Easily compliments farmhouse cottage or loft decors.

Close up of the top.

Display it on a chest of drawers or table. Stuff it with journals or scarves or even in the bath with toiletries.

Great gift for the bride or wedding couple. Give it to your Mom for all the family memories. Makes a great housewarming and birthday gift, too.

Palette: dark green, olive, leaf green, white, cream, light pewter gray.

Measures:outside 14.75″ x 11.5″ x 8″ high. inside 12.75″ x 9.75″ x 6.5″ high.
The sides of this nature box are 1/2 stock poplar with mortised hinges.

The design is sketched on my own hand crafted wood keepsake box. I hand paint and add my signature line work. Each box is a one of a kind work. I do not use stencils transfers or prints and they are always my original work. A functional piece of art can easily fit any decor from traditional funky whimsical or of course farmhouse.

Every piece is signed and dated.

This morning I asked and listened.

Image from positive-notes.tumblr.com

It is rare for me to get a crystal clear message from the divine self yet on an occasion or two I have been so unbelievably fortunate to be inspired with a message with clarity no one could ignore. We all have growth spurts when we are young. This morning I had a spiritual growth spurt. I woke up with the understand about where I was heading and the message was received with amazing clarity, I could have no doubt.

I wrestle with the question what is my purpose all the time. Age is not a prerequisite for that question. Today it flashes over everything. Find your purpose. Are you on the right path? Do you do what you love? in your job? in your life? The questions is exhausting and confusing.

Struggling and finding your own way is life. Doing it the way you are meant to is confusing, things change and your feelings change. How do you figure it all out?

Listening. It is the only way to have any growth any awareness and any awakening in life. Today, it has been a very long time since I have really listened, I heard an answer. The answer to my question was… oops that was my answer you are going to have to listen for your own.

Nature Art Watercolor by Laurie Rohner

That is exactly my point, no matter how many people tell you what they think is the answer you and you alone have to hear a response for your own question. For as many different people in this world, no two alike, is the response to your purpose in your life and each life purpose is as different. Money friends family jobs community religion business status awards mean absolutely not a thing so stop putting them into your equation. They are the outcome from a life lived correctly.

One clue I can give you is stop asking is this _________. (fill in the blank) Accept the road you are on and keep heading down it. You can always change direction take another path. Your life is lived from the core of your being, the divine spark inside. It is from that spark of light the answer will be heard, so listen and keep listening until you hear an amazing life altering answer. Could be huge and epic or small and beautiful. Keep listening I assure you it is worth it.

In the garden with Mom.

Mother’s Day is fast approaching us and you may want to buy something very special this year for the remarkable epic women in our lives. I am not referring to just the biological mothers but to all the women mothering adopted children (though in their hearts they gave birth to them)or the furry children or nurture friends or the precious earth this is a day for every women who nurtures another precious being. Maybe you are one of these other women or you know one of these gorgeous souls. Wouldn’t it be special to recognize them by giving them a gift, too? So many women by their very nature are the nurturing energies the universe is every day grateful for and I ask you why are we not grateful also? It does not have to be much just a little thank you note left in the mail box that you made by hand. Or a pretty little flowering plant or dig up a violet (I have hundreds in the yard) and paint up a clay pot. Or go big and buy one of my handmade painted things at Laurie Rohner Studio where everything is original and hand painted one of a kind gifts.

The other secret real artists know.

“This is the other secret that real artists know and wannabe writers don’t. When we sit down each day and do our work, power concentrates around us. The Muse takes note of our dedication. She approves. We have earned favor in her sight. When we sit down and work, we become like a magnetized rod that attracts iron filings. Ideas come. Insights accrete.”

Resistance is experienced as fear; the degree of fear equates to the strength of Resistance. Therefore the more fear we feel about a specific enterprise, the more certain we can be that that enterprise is important to us and to the growth of our soul. That’s why we feel so much Resistance. If it meant nothing to us, there’d be no Resistance.”

“Are you paralyzed with fear? That’s a good sign. Fear is good. Like self-doubt, fear is an indicator. Fear tells us what we have to do. Remember one rule of thumb: the more scared we are of a work or calling, the more sure we can be that we have to do it.”

I have to admit I live with fear everyday. I do have self doubt and I know to the core of my being what I am doing is absolutely right for me, not you or my neighbor or co-worker or family member but for moi. Decades of living and learning through some painful and terrifying experiences I have learned stop thinking the path before you is not the right one. It is your path not the collective sum of all others but unique to your life. Stop resisting and learn to answer the tug in your gut telling you to follow that scary road.

Learning the difference between fear due to danger and fear due to the unknown takes experience and time. Understanding the subtle signs and gut reactions also takes finesse and understanding all which comes with living your life.

Custom watercolor by Laurie Rohner

Custom watercolor by Laurie Rohner

Today I started another watercolor and realized I have conformed, feelings of doubt and resistance to even create was work. When I am working I find out the most amazing qualities about myself through the process of creating. Maybe it is because when I am truly present, what it is I am here to do (not being to full of myself) creating art, I hear whispers. Soulful nature divine spiritual whispers from a little voice we all hear to many times but never pay attention to what it is telling us. I need to pay attention and I need to create everyday.

I am busy doing so much to get to a place that when I get there I may not be any better off than I am right now. Sometimes we keep ourselves moving doing and thinking, we are not feeling the fear and our doing becomes more, the resistance becomes overwhelming. An important person in my life used to use the word insurmountable when things ratcheted up a notch and I knew it was her way of avoiding the fear. The word would make me cringe. We together had some tough experiences and the word did fit but the fear never went away and never did the resistance become less. Funny thing now this dear soul passed and when I hear the word I know it is time to buckle down face the fear and move forward.

Fear is a part of life and I have found it can be friendly. Fear reminds me of the old cranky person who comes across as mean, no one likes the person and the children stay clear. The cranky person does not mind because this is the purpose of its life and has never known another way of living. We know, I know there is.

When you face the fear in your life and allow for the creative nature inside to emerge, life is worth it. I am an artist. I can understand the quote for when I create I face the biggest fear I have which is am I good enough.

What is it you need to face about you or your life?
