Large Painted Keepsake Box

BetweenTheWeeds is a name that first came about while living in Vermont. I always thought I looked at life between the weeds, viewing the world with an observer’s eye. Secretly I would have loved to have been an Archeologist sketching out my findings.

I have been painting, drawing, designing in some manner or fashion since I can remember. I received my BA in Studio Arts, where I studied the fine art of printmaking painting and interior design. My very first love was and still is watercolor paintings. Andrew Wyeth watercolors and Redoute illustrations inspire my work.

My fairy houses are creations from the woodlands with moss twigs lichen bark and branches glued and nailed in place. Fairies form our natural world and I am infatuated with this side of life.
Painted furniture stems from my flower shop days. The smell of pine cedar poplar getting cut into bits and pieces for a design is an inspiring way to start the day. My Painted Keepsake Boxes are part of the functional art collection. Custom unique one of a kind and handmade down to the last nail and glue glob a reflection of the flowers and fauna of the woodlands.
My paintings are based in traditional detailed realism of landscapes and floral imagery. At the moment I am inspired by woodland illustration renderings inspired by anything and everything that I am infatuated with for the moment.
About my watercolor paintings:
My paintings are original watercolors. Each one is unique and one of a kind. They are painted on both hot and cold pressed watercolor paper. Hot pressed paper has a smooth finish, while cold pressed paper has a textured finish. I use two different paper weights, 140lb. and 300lb. My watercolor paintings on 300lb paper are sturdy and do not flex and is the weight I prefer to paint on though costly. The original watercolor illustration renderings painted on 140lb. paper can be slightly cockled, a common characteristic of the medium, this is from wetting the paper with paint and water. In most cases the paintings dry flat. All of my paintings are titled, signed and dated in pencil on verso and initialed on the front.
About my painted furniture and functional art:
All of my paintings are original. Each one is unique and one of a kind. They are sanded and prepped, first primed then painted or stained readying the surface for decorative painting. I typically lay out the design in pencil; establish a color palette, finishing the design with an ink pen in a linear fashion. All pieces receive several coats of varnish; in between each layer I hand rub the surface creating a soft buffed finish. Every piece is finished with a bees wax to ensure protection.

About my fairy houses:
All my houses are unique and custom crafted for the fairy living in the house. Woodland in nature is handmade from building the base to decorating the interiors. Nature inspired woodland sculpted art can be used outside or in. If placed outside expect only 1 maybe 2 years before the environment plays its part. Will last much longer in and mist the houses, this keeps them from drying out. Keep out of direct sunlight.

Care of art:
All work on paper is quite fragile. Care for your new art by choosing an acid free or archival matt material, frame with UV protection and most importantly, hang art away from direct sunlight and moisture.

My functional art and painted furniture can be maintained with a light buffing of butcher or fine bees wax once a year. Use a damp cloth to clean and buff with a soft cloth to bring the sheen back. My finishes are to last generations.

My fairy houses can be used inside or out though outside they will not stand the elements of weather. If you spritz the moss every week you might even find the magic come alive and watch it grow.

My current obsessions include: natural history, anatomy, garden maps, archeology, botany, fairies, avian anatomy, bird nest study, wallpaper, calligraphy and patterns.

I hope you enjoy my collection of work. I am grateful for the opportunity to share it with you!
