Illustrated Feathers

I am finding feathers everywhere and anywhere. It was very obvious something was trying to get my attention. I am focusing on nature and the energy I feel when I walk about in the woods or down the street. I am not sure why they need to get my attention but it is said guides and angels will often leave a feather behind. That is a very nice thought but… you can go nuts trying to discover what they might be saying. I am learning to relax and allowing the flow of life and nature to work through and around me. Then one evening as Tuck and I were quietly watching the world around us come alive a crows feather fell in front of me and as the light hit it beautiful shades of browns and dark blues radiated from it. It was as if all of nature was screaming at me paint it you fool. So I did. A very new series of illustrations simplified and detailed plants nests birds and of course feathers are being created.

I love this new series of nature illustrations in pencil and watercolor. I love the detail of the feather and the subtle color changes. I found this crows feather and thought how simple yet elegant. The colors of the black changed as the light did.I used hot pressed fine artpaper. I hand deckle the edges so you can mount my illustrations onto matte board or frame it the usual way. To protect the art you should frame it under a glazing. I chose a 6″ x 6″ size because it can easily be mounted on a 8″ x 10″ board and use a standard frame found almost anywhere. Please ask me about shipping internationally for actual charges.

Woodland Fairy Watercolor Painting at Etsy

I worked on this painting thinking the entire time what if? What if there are fairies? and where would you find them? Here in this place I painted of lush shade and fragrant fern fronds. A place where just being is more important than what the outside world might think. You see I know fairies exist because I saw them popping in and out between the weeds on the forest floor. I heard their faint whispers and giggles as they waited for me to finish. It was the fairies that inspired this painting to come forth from my artist’s mind. Can you hear them now?

Shaded WoodsI once upon a time lived in a wonderful place called Vermont, maybe you have been there? I painted this so I could remember the beautiful cool woods I would escape to on a warm summer day. A gentle breeze would kiss your face and then you would be in a place where fairies live and magic is alive.

Watercolor on panel. This painting is on a special treated panel with a 2″ band of wood around the panel. The panel is protected with a fixative and ready to hang without the need of glass or glazing.

A few of my watercolors…

White Lilies

The Pink Lady

Watercolor are my first love. My technique is a process that is long and labor intensive taking many days to complete. I use a technique called glazing. I paint my images several times building and layering the pigments with washes of color. I find it gives the images a quality of depth and realism which is not what you expect with watercolor paintings. Most of the time I work from a multitude of photos to sketch out how I want the painting to look. I choose my color palette and then lay the first washes down on a cotton rag cold pressed paper. Recently I have experimented with some other materials such as aqua-board and watercolor paper mounted on board.

This painting The Pink Lady is in my collection and it is the painting that started me on this path of watercolor painting in large format. I had just recovered from a serious car accident and had lost my job all within weeks. This is a very special painting and I keep it because it represents how fragile life is and even though things look bleak you can always find light in your life.

The Shaded Trees is on the Panel I had discussed and though I enjoyed the subject matter I found my style and technique did not work as well on this base. I love this painting because I expect to see some magical beings to suddenly appear popping out from behind the trees.

Black Eyed Susans in the Field
