Magic and beauty are really in ourselves.

“The appearance of things change according to the emotions and thus we see magic and beauty in them, while the magic and beauty are really in ourselves.”Kahlil Gibran, was a great artist, writer & poet.

Here a two little watercolors I have finished and added to Laurie Rohner Studio. They are both influenced by the sky above and the ever changing landscape below. These are Vermont landscapes. Never did a day start or end without some reminder how special and small we are but how unique and magical we can be if only to tap into the beauty within. For me Vermont holds my heart strings and even today as I write this it pulls me closer calling me to hear its song. I believe we can tap into the magic and beauty of the this earthly plan and for each of us it is at a special different place, mine being Vermont. You may find yours in the midst of a busy energetic city street or the desolate landscape of a desert. Maybe it is nowhere and you see it every moment of each glorious day shining out from the cells of your being and as you watch from behind the eyes of your body you understand see and feel the changes occurring all around and can marvel at the beauty of life.  I am not one of those people but what a goal to have and dream to achieve?

There is a way that nature speaks.

There is a way that nature speaks, that land speaks. Most of the time we are simply not patient enough, quiet enough, to pay attention to the story. Linda Hogan

Simple beauty of nature with lilac watercolor by Between The Weeds.

The best remedy for those who are afraid, lonely or unhappy is to go outside, somewhere where they can be quiet, alone with the heavens, nature and God. Because only then does one feel that all is as it should be and that God wishes to see people happy, amidst the simple beauty of nature. Anne Frank

Isn’t it the simple things that offer the greatest pleasure and joy. Nature is a part of my life and always will be and in the foggy moments of any life nature is always there ready for you to connect. It could be a flowers scent, image of a gorgeous landscape,or glimpse of a hummingbird connecting you to simplicity of nature.

Lilacs blooming this time of year with their sweet scents and colorful variety of blooms conjures in my mind afternoon tea with my grandma, Honey. She always had a story to share and I can still hear her giggle (which was very infectious). For Mothers Day in the flower shop I would have bouquets ready all around the shop and the shop would fill with the sweet aroma. So I painted this painting in memory of those wonderful times in my life. Maybe lilacs conjure a memory for you also.

Want to buy this fun whimsical not to cottage garden painting? Check out Laurie Rohner Studio or Between The Weeds.

Nature does not hurry at Between The Weeds.

Nature does not hurry, yet everything is accomplished. Lao Tzu

Today at Between The Weeds I would like to share with you one of the new watercolor painting I have just completed. I had hoped to share this new work with you for Mother’s Day. Then one day I looked at this quote I have scribbled on my studio table and was reminded all things happen in their own time. A leaf does not worry about not opening because it is May it opens when it is ready. Slowly I am learning to work within the space where nature exists. We forget is even there.

This is an original watercolor of a woodland garden with bees and a hint of the sky. You can buy it at Between The Weeds or at Laurie Rohner Studio.

The other secret real artists know.

“This is the other secret that real artists know and wannabe writers don’t. When we sit down each day and do our work, power concentrates around us. The Muse takes note of our dedication. She approves. We have earned favor in her sight. When we sit down and work, we become like a magnetized rod that attracts iron filings. Ideas come. Insights accrete.”

Resistance is experienced as fear; the degree of fear equates to the strength of Resistance. Therefore the more fear we feel about a specific enterprise, the more certain we can be that that enterprise is important to us and to the growth of our soul. That’s why we feel so much Resistance. If it meant nothing to us, there’d be no Resistance.”

“Are you paralyzed with fear? That’s a good sign. Fear is good. Like self-doubt, fear is an indicator. Fear tells us what we have to do. Remember one rule of thumb: the more scared we are of a work or calling, the more sure we can be that we have to do it.”

I have to admit I live with fear everyday. I do have self doubt and I know to the core of my being what I am doing is absolutely right for me, not you or my neighbor or co-worker or family member but for moi. Decades of living and learning through some painful and terrifying experiences I have learned stop thinking the path before you is not the right one. It is your path not the collective sum of all others but unique to your life. Stop resisting and learn to answer the tug in your gut telling you to follow that scary road.

Learning the difference between fear due to danger and fear due to the unknown takes experience and time. Understanding the subtle signs and gut reactions also takes finesse and understanding all which comes with living your life.

Custom watercolor by Laurie Rohner

Custom watercolor by Laurie Rohner

Today I started another watercolor and realized I have conformed, feelings of doubt and resistance to even create was work. When I am working I find out the most amazing qualities about myself through the process of creating. Maybe it is because when I am truly present, what it is I am here to do (not being to full of myself) creating art, I hear whispers. Soulful nature divine spiritual whispers from a little voice we all hear to many times but never pay attention to what it is telling us. I need to pay attention and I need to create everyday.

I am busy doing so much to get to a place that when I get there I may not be any better off than I am right now. Sometimes we keep ourselves moving doing and thinking, we are not feeling the fear and our doing becomes more, the resistance becomes overwhelming. An important person in my life used to use the word insurmountable when things ratcheted up a notch and I knew it was her way of avoiding the fear. The word would make me cringe. We together had some tough experiences and the word did fit but the fear never went away and never did the resistance become less. Funny thing now this dear soul passed and when I hear the word I know it is time to buckle down face the fear and move forward.

Fear is a part of life and I have found it can be friendly. Fear reminds me of the old cranky person who comes across as mean, no one likes the person and the children stay clear. The cranky person does not mind because this is the purpose of its life and has never known another way of living. We know, I know there is.

When you face the fear in your life and allow for the creative nature inside to emerge, life is worth it. I am an artist. I can understand the quote for when I create I face the biggest fear I have which is am I good enough.

What is it you need to face about you or your life?

In love with clouds? New Clouds Oil Painting at Between The Weeds.

I love to watch the sky, clouds, stars and the moon make me wonder. I have worked on original cloud oil painting landscapes. This vibrant oil on canvas nature art painting is  titled Clouds and Purple Fields. I refer to my paintings as nature art because I try to capture the images and designs in nature.

The original painting landscape is Vermont but could be anywhere. It is morning and the sun is just starting to brighten the clouds with color after a night of showers. The landscape shows mountains in the distance and the grasses are a beautiful shade of heather purple.

Palette: cyan blue, sky blue, heather purple, lavender, yellow, green, umber, paynes gray, white, cream.

The painting is signed and dated on the reverse and arrives Ready to hang!

The painting measures 10X 10 inches on wrapped canvas (3/4″ deep) with staples on the back. These paintings have beautiful color and a great finish from high quality oil paints.

The staple-free sides of the canvas are painted. The painting continues around to the sides – framing is not required.

The copyright is for photographing and does not appear on the original.

In the Pink for Mothers Day.

This is a beautiful etsy treasury put together by Treadlers’ Shop: Spend your precious time spinning or wearing the Earth’s most precious natural fibers. The finished yarns and textiles that are created by hand, yours or mine, are exceptional. A hand spinner who eventually became a weaver, it is silks and the most precious natural fibers from creatures who share our world that enchant me. Whether using commercial yarns or my own hand spun yarn, my usual preference is weaving in an uncomplicated plain weave structure where, I believe, the fibers speak most eloquently for themselves. Spend your precious time with precious fibers.

Be sure to visit her shop along with the ones featured here. By the way I am also featured here with my watercolor available at Between The Weeds.

Participate relentlessly in the manifestations of your own blessings.

“Happiness is the consequence of personal effort. You fight for it, strive for it, insist upon it, and sometimes even travel around the world looking for it. You have to participate relentlessly in the manifestations of your own blessings. And once you have achieved a state of happiness, you must never become lax about maintaining it, you must make a mighty effort to keep swimming upward into that happiness forever, to stay afloat on top of it. If you don’t, you will leak away your innate contentment. It’s easy enough to pray when you’re in distress but continuing to pray even when your crisis has passed is like a sealing process, helping your soul hold tight to its good attainments.” - Elizabeth Gilbert

Watercolor Painting Botanical Garden Flower Pink Foxglove

Original Artwork by Laurie Rohner

Watercolor Botanical by Laurie Rohner

Watercolor Botanical by Laurie Rohner

Botanical garden flower watercolor painting of a pink foxglove (digitalis) detailed large original nature artwork by Laurie Rohner. Nature art at its best.

Foxglove are an interesting flower to paint because they have many different blooms. I chose to show each one uniquely painted with detail depth as in nature. Imagine this flower surrounded by dozens of these botanical garden flower stems, it is nature giving us a smile.

Palette: deep green, pink, pink, poppy red, soft yellow, white, cream, green, brown.

Image size: 30″ x 11″
140lb rag hand molded watercolor paper

You can use this painting as a focal point in a farmhouse cottage style room and mix white painted furniture with pops of creams soft pinks and deep greens. Lovely piece of original artwork for the Hampton Cottages.

The copyright is for photographing and does not appear on the original.

I paint using a process called glazing. It is layering pigments down on top of each other building depth of pigment and emotion through color. The process is labor and time intensive. This painting took approximately 56hrs to complete. There are about 10 layers of pigment on this painting.

The painting was finally returned from an exhibit it was in.
