Great gift idea for woodland weddings.

bed woodland fairy house

Bed before added to fairy house.

Briar, head fairy at Between The Weeds,  is busy at her drafting table with plans for some of her newlywed friends. It is a lot of fun having someone so energetic assisting me in the fairy shop these days. This is one of the newly constructed woodland fairy house wedding cottages in my fairy shop at BetweenTheWeeds. What I like the most about this woodland cottage is the detailed work on the sides and the custom fabric bed. I have added a few more photos here of this sturdy mystical tree magic fairy house.

Fairies have honeymoons too. A woodland cottage fairy house constructed by hand out of branches twigs and wood form this enchanting honeymoon cottage. Inside is a painted custom bed for two with canvas linens and a teal ribbon throw across the bottom. Next to the bed is a table from a branch. On the other side of the room is a chair and table with a clay pot hanging from the rafters for light. There is a chair at the foot of the bed and a bark floor. Moss is growing around the edges and twigs soften the one wall. Both side walls are painted a pretty shade of Indian Sky.

The outside of the house has bits and bobs of sea glass and raffia and a blank piece of wood across the front (for personalizing the house) with the name of the newlywed couple or date or just a sweet blessing to mark a special day. The back is formed with split branches and the sides are split branches moss pebbles and cones combined.

Outside measures 12″ x 11″ x 8″ roughly.
Built over a wood carcass and weighs about 4lbs.

These are my original designs and I hand craft each piece for my woodland fairy houses..

Let me introduce you to Briar Goblinwitch, head faerie.

When the winds of March are wakening the crocuses and crickets,
Did you ever find a fairy near some budding little thickets,…
And when she sees you creeping up to get a closer peek
She tumbles through the daffodils, a playing hide and seek.

Sweet Pea Fairy House for Garden

My studio is very busy collaborating with my faerie friend. New houses and furniture are in the works for all those wonderful gardens.

By the way let me introduce you to the head faerie and my dear friend Briar Goblinwitch. She has been very annoyed with me for not introducing her sooner. I do apologize. I am very lucky to have her in my life. She is indispensable in my studio, she coordinates her faerie friends who find all the bits and bobs of nature I use in the making of the houses and furniture.

In her faerie realm she lives in a leafy dell and a bluebell glade is near. Though I see her whenever I ask because she has deemed me worthy, to everyone else she can be seen in the enchanted moments between sleep and waking. Briar has dark spiked hair and intense blue eyes pointed ears with tiny wren feather earrings. She wears the softest suede navy pants, a bluebell blue wispy tunic with silver threads, a gold sunbeam belt cinched about her tiny waist and green wings like a butterfly. Briar is tall for a faerie and always has a devilish smile. You can not help but feel good when Briar is around. She has high flat boots and keeps her magical wand tucked in the right boot. Dangling around her neck on a silver chain is something that is very sacred to all faeries, their faerie dust. It is how they move from our realm to their own and without it, well you do not want to know. Forget about mama if a faerie ain’t happy nobody is happy.

Open our minds to enjoyment.

If we opened our minds to enjoyment, we might find tranquil pleasures spread about us on every side.  We might live with the angels that visit us on every sunbeam, and sit with the fairies who wait on every flower.  ~Samuel Smiles

This morning the sun was shining and the air had warmed, nature beckoned me to come outside. Sometimes we have no choice but to answer. I gathered up Tuck and a hot cup of coffee and found a lovely spot in the sun upon a chair I had made. Things had been a little scattered this past week and thankfully all was accomplished. My mind was already swirling with all that still had to be done. Whenever I am feeling pulled in all directions I end up like a boat in a storm being bounced around and not getting to where I needed to. I instinctively knew the connection to nature had to be honored and strengthened.  So I sat quietly sipping my coffee and allowing nature to unfold around me. My mind settled down and I started to breathe a little deeper. As you drop the barriers the surge of energy you can feel is uplifting at the very least. Off in the distance I heard a bird cry and then one closer called back. I saw in the tree tops a large majestic hawk sitting as if he was watching me. Then I noticed the mate come in closer. I sat watching as they maneuvered their way to my yard. They constantly called back and forth to each other until finally stopping in a tree not more than 20 ft from where I was watching. All three of us studied each other and there was a sense of a non-verbal communication between us. Several minutes went by till suddenly the spell broke and the pair of hawks took flight swooping down and over my head and up into the sky.

The thrill of the moment and experience lingers on and I would not have had the pleasure if I had not opened my mind and heard what was being whispered in my ear. Go outside and you will be a part of something very special. What have you shut you mind to experience? What tranquil pleasures have you missed?

Are you serious about being creative?

Detailed Illustrated Keepsake Box at Etsy

Over at Etsy there is a thread about can I make enough only on Etsy? It caught my eye and I read the post. What stood out were the remarks mostly saying you need to do other things to attract buyers to your shop. This I really agree with and if you are not creating you are marketing.

Underlying the remarks was a sentiment that crafters (I dislike this description) can never make enough to support themselves unless there is a husband supporting the family or you. One, these statements were obviously made by women probably mothers and married. Making this generalized observation about crafts is simplifying the real business of creating handmade quality product and the average crafters is not serious about their work and this is why it is a craft. The creative artist is extremely serious and looks at their work as a business. Their quality highly different work overlooked because Etsy and other sites are being overrun by the I like to craft people. Not everyone at Etsy are in this category and many are serious artists and serious business people. It is impossible for Etsy to filter the not serious crafters from the serious artist.

Maybe it is up to the person to ask themselves if you are not serious than move aside and allow the serious artist show their work. There are church fairs and local outlets for those who just dabble. For some of us it is our livelihood and there is no one else picking up the tab and we could not be happier. This is our chosen profession and we work every day at our jobs. Having your own business is not for those that look at it as being part-time. Art is serious business and artist are serious business people.

So I ask you are you serious about being a creative artist or are you a part-time crafter?

My dog ate the fairies.

Today has been a real challenge starting with a painting I had sent last week to a friend and this morning delivered back to me marked insufficient postage. So down to the post office to resend my package. Oh and it was only 90 cents shy. Job finished and package back on the road. Not too bad just a hiccup in life I think I can cope.

Tucker the fairy eating dog.

Back to work and happily today I am painting some new small watercolors of thistles and flowers and fairies. Everything is just falling into place the colors the images even my little fairies looked like wonderful magical fairies. I was not sure if I could do fairies. I painted thistle fairies and coneflower fairies, field flowers and it flowed out onto the small pieces of rag paper I had cut for this project.  I was so excited and pleased looking at what I had accomplished. My coffee was cold and it was time to take a well deserved break.

Tucker always sleeps on a loveseat while I paint. Whenever I leave he is usually right next to me, secretly wishing I will take him for a ride or walk. Today he stayed behind. I thought maybe he did not hear me head down the stairs and put it out of my mind. Nuked my coffee and called Tucker. No dog. Strange so I went to investigate and there is Tucker swallowing the last fairy painting. My heart sank all my lovely fairies gone. I screamed Tucker ran and as he passed me running paws flying everywhere, he lets out one nice burp.

I don’t know why I found this amusing but I did. I started to chuckle and Tucker stopped and looked at me quite confused. I guess he thought I had finally gone nuts. I can honestly say no. What I did do is to find the humor in this challenging situation. In my head I could hear the words you can choose happiness you can choose peace or you can get mad. Getting mad at Tucker still would not have made the paintings reappear and he was only doing what dogs do, they eat paper. He knows he screwed up just from my first reaction and chances are good he probably will eat more paper again. I have to make sure I do my part and do not leave things where he might reach them.

Tomorrow I will try to paint some more fairies.

Even Fairies Celebrate Halloween.

The woodland fairies are festive little creatures and love to celebrate almost anything. Halloween is one of the favorites among the forest people. My woodland fairy setting is for Halloween yet you can use this wonderful setting for all year-long. I think they are the perfect add-on piece to my woodland fairy houses. Be ever so watchful on Halloween and you just might catch a glimpse of the fairies gathered around the caldron making mischief for the other trick or treaters.  A flash or a spark of light and you can be sure you just caught a glimpse of a fairy.
